The Case for Texas — February 2020 Research Report — Link

– Ecliptic Capital’s Christy Cardenas

Christy Cardenas, Managing Partner, of new Austin VC fund Ecliptic Capital has just published a deeply researched report on the state of the innovation economy from a financial perspective. It’s a great, short read that lays out the economic drivers of the Texas startup ecosystem — The Case for Texas

Are Accelerators Becoming A Trap For Startups? — Link

– The Houston Chronicle’s Andrea Lienfelder

“Accelerators, the short, intensive programs that helped propel companies such as Airbnb and Dropbox to fame and fortune, are proliferating in Houston and across the country and providing more opportunities for startups to find the advice, money and connections that might lead to success. As a result, startups are finding it easier to enroll in multiple programs, sparking a debate in the innovation sector of whether moving from one accelerator to another merely delays the hard work of building a business and testing the market for new products and services.

“You’re doing startup theater the longer you stay in accelerator programs,” said Marc Nathan, who advises startups for the Austin law firm Egan Nelson. “At some point startups have to grow up or die.” — Andrea Lienfelder

— -

I want to clarify my quote about ‘Startup Theater’ — it was in reference to companies going through multiple programs without significant customer growth to show for it. I get the extreme value of gong through the right program at the right time (ideation stage / incubator | emerging stage / incubator | growth stage / accelerator), but I’ve observed several companies hanging around programs when they should be out talking to potential customers. It’s the same concept as someone who is a sixth-year undergrad or going through a second MBA program — there is a cutoff in a startups life that a going through multiple programs will start to have diminishing returns for many companies. I want to personally thank Andrea Lienfelder for years of dedication to the Houston startup community and wish her out-of-this-world success with her new Space beat.
