We’re rounding the corner on our first month of the global shutdown and some general consensus is starting to form: Work from home isn’t so bad, school teachers have the patience of saints, and business will go on. Almost everything else is up for debate — we’re too early to even have a name for this era yet: The Corona Slowdown?, The 2020 Pause?, The COVID Crisis? Time will tell of course, but I’m proposing ‘The Great Reset’ as some of our fundamental beliefs of health care, Federal vs. State government crisis management, supply chain resiliency, media messaging, and higher education are being questioned and challenged. These were all issues before the pandemic, but they’re coming into sharp relief now — maybe because we have time on our hands to think about them without the daily distractions of modern life.

What I‘m trying to figure out now is how this is going to immediately affect the business community and our society in general so we can prepare for the uncertain future. The opinion that I’m starting to believe is that we’re going to experience an average 30% drop in key metrics like revenues, hiring rates, and valuations. This is based solely on my instinct and conversations with startups and investors from across the country (without any hard data to back it up yet), but this unscientific survey generally supports my gut feeling: NFX VC & Founder Sentiment Survey. Investors are still writing checks for existing deals in their pipeline, but startups who were planning on raising funds need to consider taking a haircut on valuation. The goalposts have moved — a month ago (coincidentally the day that SXSW was supposed to start), it was all about valuation optimization and raising enough runway for 18 months of steady growth. Today, it’s about survival until the end of the summer — the earliest timeframe that we’ll see people back to some bare minimum of ‘normal’.

Some markets are clearly poised to do much better than a negative 30% (e.g. Telemedicine, Video Meetings, Online Learning) than others who will have a much steeper drop (e.g. Travel, Commercial Real Estate). Some of it has to do with regular business cycles, but some of it has to do with evolving from legacy Post-Industrial societal norms (e.g. formal offices, 40-hour workweeks, mandatory in-person meetings). This current crisis accelerated a number of trends that were already gaining momentum like the general acceptance of flexible hours and remote work. Entrepreneurs are built to adapt to shifting markets and I’m optimistic that the survivors of today will be the leaders of tomorrow.
