TXDOT “Star Wars Day” Road Sign for May the 4th

I took a break from back-to-back Zoom calls to get an oil change on Friday and I was disturbed by two things - the sheer number of cars on the road and the fact that the oil change guy actually shook my hand when I reached out to get my keys from him. Both things were kind of shocking considering that we wouldn't have given either a second thought just a few weeks ago. I told him that it was my first handshake since February, and he seemed unimpressed by my commitment to social distancing. I probably won't be going back there, but it made me realize that at least here in Austin, there's a bigger push to 'get back to normal' than you would gather from the news. I was on several calls this week with leaders from the startup community and the general consensus is that live events won't start happening until at least September and more than likely 2021. I've participated in a number of online Demo Days this week and it made me realize the most important part of these kinds of events isn't the super-polished 'Shark Tank'-style pitches with beautiful graphics and charts that point up and to the right. We can watch hundreds of these as videos on YouTube and they start to blur together after the seventh or eighth pitch just like at live events. The most critical aspect of a Demo Day is the ability of an audience member (who technically should be a potential investor) to meet the entrepreneur and ask questions about the company. In person, the companies would typically wait for the whole cohort to finish and then show up to tables or booths that represent the individual startups. Usually, drinks and hors d'oeuvres are flowing by this point both in celebration of completing the grueling task of making it through a successful bootcamp program and to give a little social lubrication to the sometimes difficult conversations of determining valuations for seed-stage companies. I've always said that writing seed checks to pre-traction companies is equivalent to betting on which toddlers will eventually win Olympic Gold, and sometimes those little personal interactions help. I'm suggesting that anyone who produces Demo Day events online builds in some time and a breakout room for people to speak with the companies directly as a part of the program.
